Origin
Panettone is an iconic Italian Christmas bread with a rich history dating back centuries. Its origins are somewhat disputed, but it is believed to have originated in Milan, Italy, during the Middle Ages. One popular legend attributes its creation to a young nobleman named Ughetto Atellani, who fell in love with the daughter of a poor baker named Toni. To win her over, he disguised himself as a baker's apprentice and created a sweet bread filled with candied fruits and raisins, which became known as "pane di Toni" (Toni's bread). Another theory suggests that panettone evolved from a traditional Milanese bread called "pan del ton," which was enriched with butter and eggs. Over time, panettone became associated with Christmas celebrations and is now enjoyed throughout Italy and around the world during the holiday season.
